                Location, Location, Location

The City of Olean is the major commerce and industrial center not only for Cattaraugus County but also for the surrounding counties in New York and Pennsylvania.

Olean, N.Y. is home to several thriving industries specializing in everything from hi-tech power sources (Niagara Mohawk Power Corp.) to the manufacturing of common household products (Cutco-Alcas).

Olean’s convenient location provides for easy access to the major markets not only in the northeastern United States, but also into Canada, western Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio. More specifically, our markets extend to (yet are not limited to) Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Binghamton, New York City, Boston, M.A., Niagara Falls, Ontario, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Erie, and Cleveland.

The numbers speak for themselves. Over 120 million people reside in a 500 mile radius of the Southern Tier, which includes 50 percent of the United States population and 60 percent of the nation’s buying power. Since we are located so close to Canada, this 500 mile radius also includes 62 percent of Canada’s population and 80 percent of that buying power!

As wide-spread as Cattaraugus County’s market is, it is vital to have easy transportation to and from these cities. This is made possible by the extensive, well-developed transportation network from highways such as Interstate 86. Our easy access also includes railway and air transportation centers.

Olean also flourishes as a well-established retail center for the more than 200,000 people that live and work in the southwestern N.Y. and northwestern P.A. regions. Currently, retail sales in this area exceed $550 million annually, making it an excellent outlet for the marketing of consumer goods and services.

With over 75 percent of Cattaraugus County being open forest, woodland and farm country, tourism is a major industry. Companies already located in the area enjoy the same abundance of scenic and outdoor activity as do vacationing visitors. To learn more about this, please visit our Recreation and Culture page.

In regards to an outstanding and superior education system, Olean stands in a class by itself, all the way from Pre-Kindergarten to graduate studies. St. Bonaventure University, a nationally recognized four-year university, offers graduate and undergraduate programs in liberal arts, journalism, sciences, technology, education, business, and many others. In pursuit of an Associates Degree, one would have to look no further than the Cattaraugus County Campus of Jamestown Community College, located in a beautiful and brand new downtown campus right in the center of Olean. JCC Olean offers courses in the arts, sciences, and applied sciences (among others) and also short-term programs for industry, business, and non-profit groups to meet in-house training needs. The Olean Business Institute is also a post-secondary institution, offering degree programs in business administration, accounting, management, and secretarial science.

Olean prides itself on its affordable and available quality health care and housing. The city is the center for advanced health care facilities that serve southwestern N.Y. and northwestern P.A. Olean General Hospital provides for a full range of services, while the area has three major medical groups with more than 70 physicians practicing in about 30 different specialties.
